The lost boys
Plot
A mother and her two sons ( Michael & sam) move to a town in California. Everyone in the town speaks to Michael and Sam about mysterious deaths and vampires. Sam ( the youngest of the boys) makes friends with two boys whole claim to be ‘vampire hunters’ whilst Michael mixes in with a gang of bikers and a girl named star. Michael soon gets persuaded into drinking Davids blood, making him a vampire. Michael doesn't realize what he is doing and what he has become until his friends jump off a rail way track and so does he without dying, Michael seeks for help from his brother, making Sam and his ‘vamp hunter’ friends realize that they would need to kill the head vampire to do so. They soon find out that the head vampire is a man called max who has been dating the boys mother.
Characters
MICHAEL EMERSON -
Michael is the older brother to Sam. He is quite a quiet character although he is not afraid to lash out when he gets annoyed. His character is shows that he can sometimes be timid or aware of things eg- When David challenges him to race each other on their bikes he replies with ‘ i cant beat your bike’, which also gives us the idea that he hasn’t done this kind of reckless riding before.
He speaks very little and only when needed, which may suggest that this is caused by the emotional effects of his parents divorce. Unlike his brother (Sam) who shows interest in his comic books, Michael shows no interest in anything until he meets star. Although he got mixed up with the ‘lost boys’ he shows no attraction to the vampire style and is quite frightened by their dangerous stunts. Michael is a good looking guy with brown long curly hair, he has a muscular figure making his character look strong.
SAM EMERSON -
Sam is the younger brother to Michael. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind and he seems to be quite a confident character. He is interested in comic books in which he meets his friends ‘the vampire hunters’. When he finds out about his brother, he immediately feels threatened by him and locks all door whilst calling his mother and his friends. Eventually he realizes that Michael is still his brother, even though he is a vampire and therefore he should protect him and help him. Sam also is a good looking boy, along with his brother.
DAVID -
David is thought to be the ‘head vampire’ throughout the beginning of the film although he was soon to be discovered not when he was ‘killed’ by the antlers and the other half vampires didn’t return to human. It is then revealed that max is the head of vampires. David has a strong personality and can be violent when wanted. He drives mad on his motorbike and is a bad influence on Michael. His spiky blonde hair and bright blue eyes work in contrast to his personality. He wears dark colors and long cloaks making his character come across to the audience clearer. All the other vampires look up to David even though he isn't the head vampire, this may be due to his powerful personality.
MAX-
Max lives in secrecy about being the head vampire throughout most of the film. He owns a video store, and attempts to have a relationship with Michael and Sam’s mum. Sam and his vampire hunting friends suspect him of being the head of vampires, and tries to catch him out at a meal around their mothers house. Max has a dog named Thorn who seems to protect him and dart out at anyone that goes near him. Max seems like a normal guy throughout the film until the end, he seems like a lovely, friendly and innocent man just happy to be with Lucy ( the mother).
STAR -
Not much is said about star in the lost boys. She comes across as being Davids girlfriend, and she hangs around with the lost boys which are not a good influence on her. She gets close with Michael half way through the film although he has always had his eyes on her from the beginning. Her character is flirtatious and innocent, yet she hangs around with the wrong people. She has long wavy brown hair, which was fashionable for the period in which this film was made. She keeps giving Michael a sparkling look in her eyes, which could make him be more attracted to her.
Filming styles
MIS-EN-SCENE -
The colour used in some of the scenes are mostly really dark colours. Inside the area in which the vampires live, everything is dark and sinister. All the props inside the room make it look cold, open and gloomy. When you fist see this area, the audience immediately knows that these conditions are not in which humans would not live in. The characters that are vampires all wear long black swooshy things, giving them a strong appearance when they walk around places. This may make people around them feel intimidated. Star wears simple and fashionable clothing, making her look like she doesn’t fit in with the lost boys making the audience perhaps wonder if she has been forced to being with them, or feels like she cant leave incase of anything happening to her.
EFFECTS-
There were many effect used in this film, although mainly towards the end when the vampires are against the half vampires and the vampire hunters. In the fight at the end they used smoke to come out of the bath whilst one of the vampires were being burnt inside the bath filled with water from the church and garlic. This gave off a good effect because it showed that the vampire was being burnt instead of it just killing him. Another good effect used in this film is when the blood comes pouring out from the sinks. This looks really effective against all of the fighting going on in front of it. The sparks coming out of the speakers when the vampire gets pushed into it and gets electrocuted looks really good and the loud heavy metal music going off at the same tine makes the fighting scene seem more loud and realistic.
When David gets killed, the smoke off the antlers that are going through his body looked really effective and the slow motion effect of Michael after he killed David was really strong in contrast to what had just happened. The fire effect used when Max was killed looked really good since the colour of his eyes were a bright red, reflecting against the fire killing him.
SOUND-
The sounds used around the vampires were either loud and heavy metal, or quiet and gloomy. This shows their characters really well and relates to their personalities. The sound effects used when the vampires are dying are really loud and strong and the heavy metal music going off when the vampire gets electrocuted makes the atmosphere seem more intense. The light bubbly music used at the beginning of the film at the fair ground works in contrast to the dark music around the vampires.
TECHNIQUES-
At the beginning of the whole film, it starts by making the audience wonder about whats going on. It starts by going straight into something attacking a policeman but you cant see what it is. After that opening scene there is a small montage of events in peoples lives taking place on this new street that the boys and their mother have moved too. There is then a ‘bridge’ because you can hear the people talking inside the car but the camera is viewing the car driving along the road, it then gradually goes into the car.
Twilight
Plot
Bella Swan a 17 year old from Phoenix, Arizona moves to Faulk's, Washington to live with her dad due to her mums husband is a minor league baseball player and travels a lot for his work. Her mum used to stay behind with her but she could tell she was unhappy so she decided to stay with her dad for a while in Faulk's. She starts off at a new school, and meets new people and makes friends. The Cullen's go to this school but they don't really speak to anyone apart from their group, although Bella and Edwards have an instant connection. Bella nearly gets hit by a car yet saved by Edward even though he was at the opposite end of the car park she nearly got hit at. Bella soon realizes that his eyes change colour and many things happen which aren’t usual. Soon after some gangsters try and touch Bella in a inappropriate way but they stop when Edward appears.
Bella's father is a policeman and he’s spotted recent deaths due to some ‘animal’, Bella then decides to investigate herself about the abnormal characteristics of Edward. She realizes that he is a vampire and confesses to him that she knows what he is. They begin to fall in love because she isn’t scared of him, and because she is the only one who he cant read her mind. He begins to tell her everything about him and his family and they start a relationship. Edward takes bella to a family baseball game although they can only play when there is a thunderstorm, they are halfway through the game when alice sense the presence of the other vampires. Lauront, Victoria and James eat human blood unlike the Cullens who eat animal blood, so when they come close to Bella they can smell her and want to eat her. Alice and Jasper decide to drive Bella to Phoenix in safety from James and Victoria. James then calls Bella on her mothers phone, threatening to kill her mum unless she meets her at the ballet studio. Bella doesn’t want her mum to die, so she goes to the ballet studio alone to meet James. At the studio she finds out that it was all just a hoax and that he had been playing a video recording and that her mum wasn’t even there. Whilst recording her for Edward to watch so it would make him angry, he starts hurting Bella by throwing her around and breaking her leg. Edward and his brother Emmet, soon appear to save her and start to fight with James to release Bella and get her to safety. Bella has been bitten by James and is in severe pain meaning that all the vampires are starting to struggle due to the blood. To make Bella not turn into a vampire the venom has to be sucked out by Edward, although this will be hard for him to stop. Bella wakes up in a hospital bed with her mum leaning over her, and she is luckily safe. Bella and Edward go to the prom together.
Character
CARLISLE -
Carlisle is seen to be the head of the good vampires in this film. He is the ‘father’ of 5 people although they are not blood related. He has a wife called Esme, who is a thoughtful loving woman with curly brown sleek hair. Carlisle has blonde hair and dark brown eyes, with pale skin. The whole of the Cullen family are good looking people, and Carlisle seems to know rights from wrongs and talks to the rest of them like he’s in control. He is really thoughtful and cares about his family a lot. eg- when Rosaline doesn’t want to help Bella, Carlisle says that Bella is part of the family now.
EDWARD-
Edward is the main male character and was turned vampire in the 18th century . He comes across at the beginning as a rude antisocial character although when he starts talking to Bella he seems to open up more to everyone else around him and her. He is extremely good looking along with the rest of the Cullen family and towards the end of the film you can see that he is willing to do anything for Bella’s safety. Edward is really intelligent and can read minds although he cant read Bella's which he finds intriguing. All the girls feel like they are not good enough for them since he shows no sign of affection or effort towards any girls, he doesn’t even speak to anyone apart from his group at the beginning of the film. There’s an immediate connection between Bella and Edward when Bella starts new at his school, although at the beginning when they have to sit next to each other in biology she gets the impression that Edward hates her.
BELLA-
Bella is a Phoenix girl moved down to Faulk's to live with her father and to join a new school. She seems to have a quiet personality at the beginning of the film although she speaks a bit more when she’s around Edward. Bella can be quite stubborn and blunt due to her situation and she’s not afraid to risk her life for her family. She is deeply in love with Edward from the beginning although she thinks that he hates her from the start. She has long brown wavy hair, and pale skin which makes her fit in with the other vampires. Bella isn’t scared of Edward being a vampire, and neither his family either, which is properly another reason he loves her.

MIS-EN-SCENE -
The colours used in Twilight is a wide mixture of brights and dark colours. When the Cullen's arrived, it was in the dining hall and so the everything was bright and white just like the pale skin of the vampires and also like the vampires house. Although when Edward and Bella go to the restaurant together there is a red background wall representing romance and little white lights outlining the sides of the room making the place look pretty.
Edward is a good looking guy with pale skin ( vampire) and brown wavy hair darkening the side of him against his pale skin. Bella looks really elegant and fragile with also pale skin and long wavy brown hair, Edward and Bella have much in common. The Cullen's house is white and very modern, showing that they might have been alive for a while since they had all the money to have such a big and modern house. The house being white shows that it is clean, making them look like very clean people unlike how normal people imagine vampires to be like. The place in which the vampires live in Twilight is the opposite to the place the lost boys lived in, showing their different lifestyles. Carlisle has blonde hair which is similar to all the ‘head vampires’ in many other movies, this is because the colour blonde looks ‘innocent’ and so the directors are conflicting the idea of having something evil with the innocent.
EFFECTS-
Many effects were used in Twilight, such as when Edward flew Bella on his back, up to the trees. This looks really effective because it shows all his power and strengths that he has as a vampire, and helps the audience get to have an understanding about his character. Another scene where good effects were used is in the baseball scene and the thunder and lightning going off at the same time, indicating to the audience that this is no normal baseball game. The thunder and lightning also made the game more intense, so when the ‘bad’ vampires came ( Victoria, James and lauront), it made everything seem more dramatic.
SOUND-
At the beginning of the film it started with just a simple peaceful tune whilst the camera was zoomed in on the deer in the forest. This setting made the audience feel relaxed but also curious. Bella then suddenly speaks without her being in the film, and she says the words ‘ surly it was a good way to die, in the place of someone else, someone i loved’ which draw the audience into the film and wonder about what and who is talking. After the opening scene it shows Bella getting out of the car but the audience cant see her speaking yet she is speaking in the background about her thoughts on moving to Faulk's.
When the Cullen's arrive, the music changes in the dining room to something ‘cool’ and mysterious. This gets the audience to wonder who these strange people are. The same sort of entrance happens when the Cullen's turn up to school in their sports cars.
The music going on when the Cullen's are playing baseball is bouncy, and fun, but not usual. The sound of the thunder and lightning in the background also work as a good effect on top of the background music. When Edward and Emmett are fighting James in the ballet studio, the music turns into dark, intense yet striking music. This helps build up the tension in the audience.
TECHNIQUES -
To begin Twilight it starts off with a pan, looking down on the deer eating grass in the forest. The peaceful music in the background slowly begins to increase and quicken up making the scene more intense and making the audience curious about what was going to happen. The music gets louder still, and then all you can see is a dark figure jump onto the deer and it then cuts immediately to a peaceful sound again but in a different place. A bit later on in the film there is a point of view shot of Bella looking down through her window at Jacob when he arrives with his father for the first time. This makes the audience understand what she is thinking when she sees Jacob.
When they were playing baseball, there was a medium close up of alice’s legs as she begins to throw the ball as bowler. This is because she has her own unusual technique of bowling the ball. Later on in the ballet studio there is a reflection of James in all the mirrors. The camera pans around on all of these as if it was Bella looking around worried. This gives the audience an idea about how it was feeling for Bella to be in the situation of loads of the same person around her.
